Peat is undoubtedly an excellent growing medium. Its use in retail & commercial composts accounts for relatively low percentages of peat harvesting compared to other industries across the world, such as energy, where it is still burnt as a fossil fuel. However. It is now widely recognised that ANY destruction of peat wetlands is detrimental to the health of the overall environment as peat wetlands have an ability to capture & store carbon dioxide. They also provide rich habitats for wildlife.
With this in mind we, at Clockhouse Nursery agree that change needs to happen. Our industry has set a target of becoming totally peat free by 2028. Many environmentalists argue that this change should have been instigated many years ago. This is possibly so, but a change of this scale cannot be achieved within a short time frame, & in truth, some of the larger compost companies have been moving towards this for many years already. That is why they are now releasing many new peat free variants of their popular brands. It has taken them years of research & development into peat alternatives before they could simply DROP peat altogether.
So, we are at a stage now where we are able to offer you peat free compost alternatives for most areas of gardening. For the time being, we are giving ANY peat free compost a five-star rating on our signage. This rating is usually based on several factors including price, quality, feedback & popularity. For the moment, until more info is acquired from these relatively young products, their low environmental impact trumps all these factors. NOW is the time for experimentation & we urge you to try peat free products. So please begin a shift towards them as we are having too commercially. Your thoughts & comments about these products will be greatly received by us & the compost industry.
Rest assured many of the brands that we stock have already undergone rigorous testing to ensure a quality growing medium. For example, one brand in particular, over its R&D period, discovered that green waste needs to be composted for a minimum of seven years before it reaches a suitable state of PH neutrality to make it suitable for a wide variety of growing medium mixes. They told us that companies who use green waste that has not been composted for this period of time, cannot guarantee the PH levels of compost from batch to batch.
For the moment, the use of peat is NOT illegal. We will continue to stock peat alternatives for as long as they are available to us or until its use is outlawed completely, whilst continuing to encourage you to make the shift to peat free. In fact, it may even be time to consider how much compost you use altogether. Commercially we aim to move away from peat as quickly as possible using the next few years experimenting with compost formulas that fit our style of growing best. The winds of change are blowing. They are whistling through the foliage of our gardens laden with the best of intentions. Their aim is to try to make gardening more ecologically aware & less environmentally damaging. As we are all people who enjoy gardens, plants, wildlife etc, this can only be a good thing. We can all play our part if we begin to make small changes now for a better future.

Not many Garden Centres can boast over ninety years of history, and yes, we have seen many changes over that period. Indeed change will continue as we strive always to supply the best in plants and facilities. One thing, however, will never change:
The core philosophy first introduced by Archibald John Mills way back in 1928 remains - the philosophy that built the company’s reputation, sustains it now, and will guide it in the future:
The best way to keep gardeners happy is to offer them plants of the highest quality, sold at reasonable prices.Read more
