Garden Jobs This Month & Social Updates near Newgate Street

Garden Jobs This Month - MARCH.

FLOWERS

  1. Pick off any developing seedheads on daffodils and other spring bulbs, but leave the foliage to die back naturally
  2. Finish pruning roses early in the month
  3. Cut dogwoods, willows, cotinus and paulownia right down to the base to promote vigorous new growth
  4. Start sowing hardy annuals outdoors, including California poppies, nasturtiums and opium poppies
  5. Tidy up alpines as they start to flower, removing dead foliage, then mulch with grit to keep the foliage off damp soil
  6. Plant faded forced bulbs out in the garden for blooms next year
  7. Plant lilies and other summer-flowering bulbs in pots and borders
  8. Feed ericaceous shrubs, such as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and pieris, with an ericaceous fertiliser
  9. Tidy up borders, removing established and newly-germinating weeds, then mulch generously with garden compost
  10. Plant new roses and other shrubs and climbers
  11. Sow native wildflower seeds in trays or modules, to produce plants for your own mini-meadow
  12. Check tender new shoots for aphids, and remove before infestations get out of hand
  13. Continue deadheading spring flowers and any remaining winter bedding so they don’t set seed
  14. Scatter general-purpose fertiliser over flowerbeds and around roses, shrubs and hedges

FRUITS & VEGETABLES

  1. Avoid carrot root fly by sowing an early crop of carrots under cloches or fleece
  2. Sow tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers and aubergines in pots indoors
  3. Plant Jerusalem artichoke tubers, at a depth of 10-15cm, spaced about 30cm apart
  4. Buy young herbs to plant in containers near your back door, for handy pickings
  5. Plant onion and shallot sets, spacing them 10-15cm apart, and keep the bed free of weeds
  6. Make the first outdoor sowings of hardy veg, such as spinach, covering with cloches or fleece
  7. Plant early potatoes in trenches on the veg plot, or in large tubs if space is limited
  8. Sow parsnips as soon as the soil starts to warm up, as they’re slow to germinate and need a long growing season
  9. Plant a fig tree in a large container to restrict its roots, which encourages fruiting and limits its overall size
  10. Feed cabbages and other brassicas with nitrogen-rich fertiliser, such as pelleted chicken manure
  11. Plant bare-root asparagus crowns in well-drained soil or raised beds, in an open, sunny spot
  12. Start hoeing veg beds as soon as the weather starts to warm up, as weeds will germinate quickly
  13. Plant strawberries in a hanging basket to keep the fruits away from slugs

IN THE GREENHOUSE

  1. Get crops off to a good start indoors to transplant into the garden later, such as celeriac, celery, lettuces and parsley
  2. Take down bubble insulation in the greenhouse once temperatures start to rise, to let in more light
  3. Sow a selection of vibrant annual climbers, such as Spanish flag (Ipomoea lobata) and black-eyed Susan (Thunbergia alata)
  4. Buy good value young bedding plants for growing on to a larger size under glass, or sow your own in a heated propagator
  5. Sow dwarf French beans in a large pot for an early indoor crop in June
  6. Plant prepared freesia bulbs in pots of rich, loam-based compost, for fragrant flowers indoors this summer
  7. Pot up overwintering cannas into fresh compost, water in, then place in a warm spot to spur them into growth
  8. Sow sweet peas in deep pots and keep them frost-free in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill
  9. Take cuttings from dahlia tubers planted last month to raise new plants
  10. Protect greenhouse sowings of beans, peas, mangetouts and sweet peas from hungry mice
  11. Be vigilant for greenhouse and houseplant pests, such as mealy bugs, and treat straight away
  12. Open greenhouse vents on sunny days to prevent humidity building up
  13. Sow coleus on a warm windowsill to enjoy their vibrant foliage indoors or in tropical-style displays outside
  14. Take basal cuttings from perennials, such as delphiniums and lupins, to root in a pot indoors

AROUND THE GARDEN

  1. Mow lawns once they start back into growth, and re-cut the edges with a half-moon edging tool
  2. Build or buy a new compost bin, ready to recycle the coming season’s garden waste
  3. Dig out a new pond, or install a water feature, to attract more wildlife
  4. Put slug barrier products around the new shoots of hostas and other susceptible perennials
  5. Replant pots of bulbs from indoors into borders, once the display is over, then water in well and apply liquid feed
  6. Check that tree ties aren’t too tight and that stakes are still firmly anchored in the ground
  7. Prune out any wind-damaged branches on trees and shrubs
  8. Fork up emerging shoots of perennial weeds, such as ground elder, removing every bit of root
  9. Place bug boxes or bundles of hollow stems in sheltered corners, where insects can lay their eggs
  10. Keep putting out food for garden birds, as the breeding season gets underway
  11. Chop down winter-grown green manure and dig into the soil, to get the veg plot ready for sowing
  12. Cut back winter-flowering jasmine to keep it within bounds and encourage flowers next year
  13. Give blackcurrant bushes a high-nitrogen feed

This Weeks Social Media Update.

WEEK 12: No Rain ? !!!

Good morning gardeners. No rain forecast for this area for over a week !!! We will believe it when we see it. It isn’t often that gardeners pray for a period without the wet stuff & we may regret saying this later in the year but, it would be nice to have a week of so of dryness.

On the nursery this week… you guessed it. More potting. A small batch of shrubs is first in the potting shed this morning followed later this week by more patio plants & bedding plant seedlings for the transplanter.

It is lovely to have some blue skies as a backdrop for the spring flowering plants around the sales areas this morning. The cover photo shows our own grown Lamprocapnos spectabilis, commonly known as ‘Bleeding Hearts’. They are looking fabulous at the moment along with the white flowered form.

Our front of house sales team has expanded recently with a few new faces limbering up ready for the busier months. Please be patient & polite to them whilst they learn the ropes. Not everyone is born as a budding horticulturalist & we all have to start somewhere. Rest assured, experience is always on hand when it is required.

The goats seem to be settling in nicely. They appear to like their new digs & are happily munching their way through the bramble foliage which is one of their favourites. They too would appreciate the ground drying out a bit. That is all for this weeks update. Look out for more posts this week. We hope you manage to get a cut on the lawn this week.

Happy Gardening Everyone.

Accessibility

The vast majority of our sales areas are accessible to all. Pathways are either tarmac or concrete both outside & inside greenhouses. We have done our best to make sure that most areas can be reached by wheelchair users although in few areas this has not been 100% possible to achieve. It is an ongoing aim of ours to improve on this situation further.

You will find three designated wheelchair friendly parking zones adjacent to the shop entrance plus several other parking spaces around the car park which provide ample space for easy access to a vehicle once parked. We provide Male, Female & Accessible toilet facilities. Should you need to borrow a wheelchair, we have two, free to use, ‘push along’ style chairs on site. These are available on a ‘first come first served’ basis & you cannot book or reserve their use in advance of your visit. We advise that wheelchair users are accompanied during their visit as there are some slopes that may prove tricky for inexperienced users. Our site is on a natural gradient & we have managed to mitigate this in some areas but not all.

Should you require any internet based services to assist you, you can log onto our free WIFI whilst you visit. Just ask a member of staff for the access code when you arrive.

We have six ‘St Johns Ambulance’ trained first aid operatives within our staff. They are fully qualified in the ‘First Aid At Work’ training module. There are a number of first aid kits at their disposal around our site including an AED device.

Site Plan

Finding your way around our site.

Over recent years we have put a lot of effort into making our nursery as easilly accessible as possible. The entire sales area & car park have hard sufaces made from either concrete or tarmac. Outside pathways are wide and our sales beds are sturdy brickwork allowing customers to sit & take a rest if one of our benches is too far away or already occupied.

We feel that you will be able to navigate our nursery with ease, whether you are here for a leisurely browse or a calculated ‘in & out’ quick shop. Free copies of the nursery map (shown to the right) are available from our customer services desk, they also have a shop layout map on the back of them. Don’t forget, a member of staff will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

We hope that you enjoy your visit.

Plant guarantee & refund policy

We are committed to ensuring that we sell excellent quality plants at what we deem to be reasonable prices. Many of our plants are grown here on site which enables us to maintain quality control to a very high level. Other plants are supplied by trusted companies, many of which have been in business for decades. We are always available to advise customers on the correct care for plants pre-purchase.

Because of this confidence in our product we do not offer a plant guarantee. However should you experience a problem with your plant within six months of purchase we will consider either replacement, refund or we will advise you on a course of action to take to resolve the issue. The plant will usually need to be returned & it must be accompanied with valid proof of purchase in the form of our itemised till receipt. We do NOT accept responsibility for plants damaged by weather conditions ( i.e. frost or extreme heat), or poor aftercare. A plant is a perishable good reliant on correct level of aftercare for survival. As such, after six months we relinquish responsibility for its nurturing & hand that duty 100% to the purchaser.

Refunds and exchanges

Should you change your mind about a ‘non plant’ product after purchase you may return it to us providing that the packaging has not been opened, the product has not been used, the product is still in saleable condition, with a valid receipt, within 28 days of purchase. Also, should the product be found to be faulty, it should be returned to us inside of 28 days with valid proof of purchase. Return or refund outside of 28 days may also be considered if the product meets the previous requirements stated. Plant returns should be within 5 working days. The plant will need to be in exactly the same condition as it was at the time of purchase and accompanied with a valid receipt. You will be offered cost equivalent exchange, or refund to the original method of payment. This will be at the discretion of management.

If a product had been delivered by us its return is soley the responsibility of the purchaser. We will not offer a pick up service unless extreme circustances dictate that there is no other option. In such a case the purchaser may be liable for the cost of pick up. This will be at the discretion of management.

All refunds will be credited in the same fashion as initially received, i.e. if you paid by card, the refund will need to be issued to the same card.

Thank you in advance to customers whom wish to stick with us despite not having a compliant vehicle.

We hope that the savings you make shopping with us can compensate for the £12.50 fine.

Established in 1928

Not many Garden Centres can boast over ninety years of history, and yes, we have seen many changes over that period. Indeed change will continue as we strive always to supply the best in plants and facilities. One thing, however, will never change:

The core philosophy first introduced by Archibald John Mills way back in 1928 remains - the philosophy that built the company’s reputation, sustains it now, and will guide it in the future:

The best way to keep gardeners happy is to offer them plants of the highest quality, sold at reasonable prices.

Horticultural Trades Association.

We are proud members of the HTA, the Horticultural Trades Association, which is ‘the’ UK’s garden trades association. The HTA has, for over 100 years, promoted the interests of its members and the industry at large.

Being a member offers us various benefits and for you, the customer, the membership should provide you with some reassurance that we are an establishment of quality that takes its responsibilities to its customers seriously.

It also enables us to offer you access to HTA backed schemes such as the national gift vouchers which are redeemable at other HTA partner businesses across the country.

Perennial GRBS

We are also proud to say that our chosen charity is Perennial GRBS (Gardeners Royal Benevolent Society). We are a Perennial Partner which means that we make an annual contribution to this worthy cause whose sole aim is to help people in many branches of horticulture including arboriculture, farming, professional gardening etc during their hours of need. Occasionally we will attach a donate button to our Facebook posts which will enable you to donate directly to this charity should you feel so inclined. Our industry is enternally thankful to those who are able to donate even the smallest amount. To find out more about their work please feel free to visit their website https://perennial.org.uk/

Dog Friendly.

We are a dog friendly establishment. We are listed with www.dogfriendly.co.uk who’s aim is to provide a directory of dog welcoming businesses accross the UK. All that we ask of you as a dog owner is that your four legged friend is kept on a lead at all times whilst wandering around the Nursery and that you clean up after them should the enivitable ‘accident’ occur.

You may access all areas of the Nursery with your pet but we ask that on busy days, you avoid queing at the tills with them especially if they are not very good around strangers. This area can feel a little confined & we feel that for anxious dogs it is best avoided. Most of the time however, you are welcome to queue & pooch may even get a dog treat if they are allowed.

One thing that we frown upon severly is the leaving of dogs in cars whilst owners are shopping. There is no excuse for this here & we have been known to release pets from boiling hot vehicles by all means at our disposal.
