Garden Jobs This Month - July.


  1. Cut lavender for drying, choosing newly opened flowers for the best fragrance, then hang up in a cool, dark place
  2. Give dahlias a liquid feed, keep them well watered and tie the shoots of tall varieties to sturdy stakes as they grow
  3. Hoe and hand-weed borders often, so weeds don’t have time to set seed
  4. Water and feed sweet peas regularly, pick the flowers every few days, and remove seed pods to prolong flowering
  5. Plant autumn bulbs, including nerines, colchicums and sternbergia, in pots and borders
  6. Feed, water and deadhead summer bedding regularly, in pots, borders and hanging baskets
  7. Cut back early summer perennials, such as hardy geraniums and delphiniums, after flowering for a second flush
  8. Take softwood cuttings from shrubs such as pyracantha, cotinus, hydrangeas and spiraea
  9. Feed and deadhead roses to keep them flowering strongly
  10. Keep watch for pests such as lily beetles, snails, aphids and vine weevils, and remove before they do too much harm
  11. Pick off flowers on coleus plants to maintain their colourful leaves
  12. Sow biennials, such as foxgloves, honesty, forget-me-nots and wallflowers, for blooms next year


  1. Check crops such as runner beans regularly for aphids, and rub or wash them off straight away, before they multiply
  2. Water thirsty plants such as celery, beans, peas, courgettes, pumpkins and tomatoes regularly
  3. Make the last pickings of rhubarb and remove any flower spikes that start to form, cutting right down at the base
  4. Thin out heavy crops of apples, pears and plums, and remove any malformed, damaged or undersized fruits
  5. Prune plum trees in dry weather, when silver leaf fungal disease is less prevalent
  6. Sow a last batch of peas and dwarf beans before mid-July for an autumn crop
  7. Shorten sideshoots growing from the framework of trained fruit trees, reducing to about five leaves from their base
  8. Water fruit trees and bushes, then lay a thick mulch of garden compost around their base to hold in moisture
  9. Cover brassicas with fine netting to prevent cabbage white butterflieslaying their eggs on the leaves
  10. Peg down strawberry runners into pots of compost to root new plants
  11. Pick courgettes regularly so they don’t turn into marrows
  12. Sow small batches of fast-maturing salad leaves, rocket and radishes every few weeks for continuous pickings
  13. Cut down broad beans after harvesting, but leave the roots in the soil to release nitrogen as they decompose


  1. Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days to improve air circulation
  2. Continue pinching out any sideshoots growing from the leaf joints of cordon tomatoes
  3. Take cuttings from fuchsias, coleus, pelargoniums, marguerites and other tender perennials
  4. Water tomatoes daily to prevent drying out, which can lead to split fruits and blossom end rot
  5. Order cold-stored potato tubers for planting in a greenhouse or cool porch next month, to harvest at Christmas
  6. Take large-leaved houseplants into the garden and hose them down to clean off accumulated dust
  7. Damp down the greenhouse floor each morning on hot days to increase humidity
  8. Be vigilant for aphids, vine weevils and other pests, and treat immediately so infestations don’t get out of hand
  9. Take leaf cuttings from houseplants including Begonia rex, African violets, Cape primroses, crassula and kalanchoe
  10. Feed tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers with high-potash tomato fertiliser every week to encourage fruiting
  11. Install a reservoir watering system, so thirsty plants such as tomatoes don’t dry out
  12. Regularly sweep greenhouse staging and floors to reduce debris that can harbour pests and diseases
  13. Train the main stem of cucumbers up supports and pinch out sideshoots two leaves after a flower or fruit
  14. Feed houseplants weekly until autumn to keep them in peak condition


  1. Compost your kitchen and garden waste, chopping up and mixing the contents to speed up decomposition
  2. Top up bird baths, ponds and water features during hot weather
  3. Water new trees, shrubs and perennials planted in spring, to help them through dry spells
  4. Trim conifers and other garden hedges
  5. Scoop out any floating pondweed and algae from pools and water features
  6. Keep mowing lawns regularly, but raise the cutting height to leave the grass longer during dry weather
  7. Water hanging baskets and patio containers daily, in the morning or evening
  8. Deadhead bedding plants, sweet peas and annuals every few days to encourage more flowers
  9. Set up an automatic watering system to look after greenhouse crops, pots and baskets if you’re going on holiday
  10. Make your own liquid feed from comfrey plants
  11. Apply tomato feed fortnightly to crops in pots and growing bags, such as tomatoes and chillies, to encourage fruiting
  12. Trim lavender after flowering to keep plants compact and bushy, but avoid cutting into old wood
  13. Be on the lookout for developing pest problems and take action straight away

This Weeks Social Media Update.

WEEK 30: Prepping.

Good morning gardeners. Welcome to the last week of July. We hope that your gardens did not get too ‘battered’ by the torrential rain experienced by us all in North London yesterday. One thing is for sure, your borders will not need watering today. Still worth checking pots & baskets though. At least your water butts should no longer be dry. On the nursery this week it is all about preparation. Believe it or not, we are filling bedding plant boxes & cleaning growing tunnels ready for the anticipated first delivery of young Autumn/Winter Bedding Plants. The first batch of mini cyclamen are already planted & growing nicely. In fact the team are spacing them out to ensure even air flow for clean growth. We are also waiting for our next delivery of commercial compost so that we can continue with shrub & perennial plant potting. Another prep job that begins today is getting number 1 greenhouse ready to receive Spring 2022’s flowering bulbs. These begin to arrive the back end of August. If you buy bulk bags of seed potatoes from us, now is a good time to start thinking about what you may need next year. This is the only area where we take advance orders, so if you need 25kg bags of specific varieties, you will need to tell us before the end of September. That is all for todays update. Please note that, although this map is still relevant, we are now orerating under some covid19 distancing procedures which means that there are partial one-way systems in place. This restricts easy access between some areas.

Over recent years we have put a lot of effort into making our nursery as easilly accessible as possible. The entire sales area & car park have hard sufaces made from either concrete or tarmac. Outside pathways are wide and our sales beds are sturdy brickwork allowing customers to sit & take a rest if one of our benches is too far away or already occupied.

We feel that you will be able to navigate our nursery with ease, whether you are here for a leisurely browse or a calculated ‘in & out’ quick shop. Free copies of the nursery map (shown to the right) are available from our customer services desk, they also have a shop layout map on the back of them. Don’t forget, a member of staff will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Plant guarantee & refund policy

We are committed to ensuring that we sell excellent quality plants at what we deem to be reasonable prices. Many of our plants are grown here on site which enables us to maintain quality control to a very high level. Other plants are supplied by trusted companies, many of which have been in business for decades. We are always available to advise customers on the correct care for plants pre-purchase.

Because of this confidence in our product we do not offer a plant guarantee. However should you experience a problem with your plant within six months of purchase we will consider either replacement, credit note or advise you on a course of action to take to resolve the issue. Should the plant need to be returned it must be accompanied with valid proof of purchase (till receipt). We do NOT accept responsibility for plants damaged by weather conditions ( i.e. frost or extreme heat), or poor aftercare. A plant is a perishable good reliant on correct level of aftercare for survival. As such, after six months we relinquish responsibility for its nurturing & hand that duty 100% to the purchaser.

Refunds and exchanges

Should you change your mind about a ‘non plant’ product after purchase you may return it to us proving that the packaging has not been opened, the product has not been used, the product is still in saleable condition, with a valid receipt, within 28 days of purchase. Also, should the product be found to be faulty, it should be returned to us inside of 28 days with valid proof of purchase. Return or refund outside of 28 days may also be considered if the product meets the previous requirements stated. Plant returns should be within 5 working days. The plant will need to be in exactly the same condition as it was at the time of purchase and accompanied with a valid receipt. You will be offered credit note, cost equivalent exchange, or refund to the method of payment.This will be at the discretion of management.

If a product had been delivered by us its return is soley the responsibility of the purchaser. We will not offer a pick up service unless extreme circustances dictate that there is no other option. In such a case the purchaser may be liable for the cost of pick up. This will be at the discretion of management.

All refunds will be credited in the same fashion as initially received, i.e. if you paid by card, the refund will need to be issued to the same card.

We do not offer refunds or guarantees on any sale or stock clearance items.

Dog Friendly.

We are a dog friendly establishment. We are listed with www.dogfriendly.co.uk who’s aim is to provide a directory of dog welcoming businesses accross the UK. All that we ask of you as a dog owner is that your four legged friend is kept on a lead at all times whilst wandering around the Nursery and that you clean up after them should the enivitable ‘accident’ occur.

You may access all areas of the Nursery with your pet but we ask that on busy days, you avoid queing at the tills with them especially if they are not very good around strangers. This area can feel a little confined & we feel that for anxious dogs it is best avoided. Most of the time however, you are welcome to queue & pooch may even get a dog treat if they are allowed.

One thing that we frown upon severly is the leaving of dogs in cars whilst owners are shopping. There is no excuse for this here & we have been known to release pets from boiling hot vehicles by all means at our disposal.
